5 Food Chemicals to Avoid With Cancer

Good nutrition is key to preventing cancer and assists during treatment. Our food should be healthy and safe. Many items labeled as "healthy" or "natural" may have harmful chemicals hidden in confusing names. The liver is the body’s main filter, removing toxins and processing important nutrients and medications. To keep your liver healthy, limit food chemicals. There are over 3,000 chemicals added to foods, but you can avoid them by choosing whole, unprocessed foods. If a food package has a long list of unrecognizable ingredients, it's best to steer clear.

Here are 5 food chemicals to stay away from

  1. Artificial Food Dyes

Food Dyes

Synthetic food dye can be found in many types of food and beverages. There are seven dyes that are especially concerning: Red 3, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3.

The three dyes most consumed–Red 40, Yellow 5 (tartrazine) and Yellow 6–are the dyes most likely to cause systemic allergic reactions. These same dyes also contain the cancer-causing contaminants Benzidine, 4-aminobiphenyl and 4-aminoazobenzene. (study)

Almost all colorants approved for use in food are derived from coal tar and may contain up tp 10ppm of lead and arsenic. Also, and not surprisingly, most coal tar colours could potentially cause cancer.

2. Carageenan

Carageenan

An additive used to thicken, emulsify, and preserve foods and drinks. It’s a natural ingredient that comes from a toxic red seaweed (also called Irish moss). In animal studies they have found that animals fed a carrageenan diet had a higher incidence of colorectal tumors. (study)

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved the additive for use, but concerns about its safety remain.

You’ll often find this ingredient in nut milks, gummies, meat products, and yogurt.

3. Potassium Bromate

Potassium Bromate

Powerful oxidizing agent commonly used as a food additive in baked goods, including breads, pastries, bagels, and crusts. It has been linked to various cancers, along with thyroid disease, kidney damage, gut irritation and reproductive abnormalities. (link).

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), categorized potassium bromate as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

4. Sodium Nitrate

Sodium Nitrate

Nitrates are used as food additives (preservatives) in processed meats. Sodium nitrate, like sodium nitrite, can change into nitrosamine in the body. Nitrosamine is a known carcinogen.

Ingesting high levels of nitrate reduces the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygen.

Food additive nitrates and nitrites were positively associated with breast and prostate cancer risks. (study)

5. MSG - Monosodium Glutamate

MSG

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is one of the most widely used food additives in the world.

Today, it can be found in a wide variety of food products, including frozen meats, crackers, canned tuna, soups, processed meats, cosmetics, dietary supplements, infant formula, salad dressings etc.

Studies have linked MSG consumption to obesity, headaches, central nervous system disorders, liver damage, and reproductive malfunctions. (study).
