Auriculotherapy Using Press Tacks
What Are Press Tacks?
Press tacks, often referred to as press needles, are similar to ear seeds in that they consist of a small square bandage that adheres directly to the skin. However, what sets press tacks apart is the inclusion of a small needle measuring approximately 1-1.5mm, while ear seeds are typically composed of a small ball made from herbs or metal. Press tacks can be effectively used in areas of the body that are too painful to treat or positioned at awkward angles that make the application of a regular needle difficult. Additionally, they are commonly provided to patients as a means of extending treatment at home, ensuring that the benefits of therapy can continue beyond the clinic setting.
Are press tacks painful?
Acupuncture press tacks, also known as press needles, are generally not considered painful for most individuals. While some people might experience a slight prick or mild discomfort upon insertion, this sensation is usually minimal and only temporary. These acupuncture needles are very thin and fine, and their insertion is carefully designed to stimulate specific points on the body gently without causing any significant pain. Once inserted, you may feel a subtle warming or tingling sensation at the site where the needle was placed, which is often a sign that the treatment is activating energy flow. If you do experience any pain, it is recommended to remove the press tack immediately and reapply it using a new one to avoid any irritation. Should the pain continue despite this precaution, it is best to discontinue use altogether to prevent unnecessary irritation or injury and consult a healthcare professional if needed.
Basic instructions for the use of press tacks at home
Press tacks are hard to put on your ear by yourself, so it's best to ask someone you trust to help you. It is ok to shower with the press tacks in.
Make sure the area is clean and dry before you apply the tack.
Peel the sticker from the plastic backing, you should see a small needle sticking out perpendicularly.
Gently place a corner of the sticker on the skin, position the needle so it will make contact with the skin as straight as possible, and then gently push or tap until the sticker is fully adhered. You may feel a small prick or pinch – that sensation is a good thing!
You do not need to push it hard enough to break the skin. If you do, be sure to care for the area afterwards.
You can apply the tacks to any painful and tight spots in the area you are addressing with treatment, or use acupuncture points shown to you by your practitioner. Remember, acupuncture points can be in slightly different locations from person to person, feel around to find the tenderest or tightest spot in the area suggested.
When done, throw them in the trash after folding them so the needle is embedded in the sticker. You may also discard in a hard sided container (hard plastic or glass) or a biohazard container.
Cautions
While Auriculotherapy Press Tacks are generally safe when used as directed, there are inherent risks and potential side effects associated with their use.
Side Effects may include: localized bleeding, minor bruising, or discomfort at the insertion site. Some individuals may also report temporary dizziness, lightheadedness, or a sense of euphoria immediately following application.
Bathing/Showering: you may bathe or shower with the press tacks in place. Exercise extreme caution to avoid snagging, pulling, or dislodging the needles when cleaning or drying the ears.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Warning: REMOVE ALL PRESS TACKS COMPLETELY BEFORE UNDERGOING ANY MRI SCAN. Failure to do so could result in complications due to the metallic nature of the press tacks interacting with the MRI magnetic field.
Risk of Infection: Although very rare, infection at the needle insertion site can occur. I understand the importance of monitoring the insertion site carefully for any signs of infection, which include:
Persistent Redness
Swelling
Warmth around the insertion site
Increased Pain at the needle site that worsens or does not subside.
Action for Ongoing Pain or Suspected Infection: If you experience continuous pain at the needle site after removal, or if any of the above-mentioned signs of infection appear, remove the press tacks immediately and seek prompt medical attention from a qualified healthcare provider.
Do not use over swollen areas, or areas where skin is very dry or broken. If they cause irritation, stop using.
